Rosehip (šipak) has long been a traditional staple in Bosnian households. Valued for its health benefits and its deep connection to the land, rosehip is found throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, growing wild on hillsides and in forests. When harvested, its fruit resembles miniature pomegranates.
For generations, Bosnians have consumed rosehip as tea, syrup, or jam (pekmez), relying on its natural antioxidant properties to support overall health. Rich in vitamin C, rosehip is used during colder months to help strengthen immunity.
In many rural communities, the harvesting and preparation of rosehip is a family tradition. Families take great pride in gathering the fruit, carefully cleaning it, and patiently cooking it down into teas, syrups, preserves, and more. These methods are passed down through generations, with each household having its own recipe.
Today, it’s common to find rosehip products in local markets and roadside stands throughout Bosnia. And members of the diaspora can enjoy these exported products wherever they are in the world.
